Astronauts on Space shuttle Endeavour spent Tuesday morning inspecting the reinforced carbon-carbon panels on  the orbiter’s  nose cap and wing leading edges. The RCC protects critical areas from super-hot gases on reentry.  While it will take engineers on the ground another few days to analyze the scans and photographs, NASA officials say there are no obvious problems.

“So far, the crew has been doing very well on orbit, they’ve been adjusting fairly nicely and we’ve been pretty much on the pace with respect to execution of the timeline,” said NASA Flight Director Kwatsi Alibaruho. “We’re looking forward to rendezvous and docking tomorrow (with the International Space Station).”

Endeavour is scheduled to dock with the space station at 12:06 a.m. EST Wednesday. Three spacewalks are planned to install and outfit a new module with a seven-pane bay window. Early Tuesday, spacewalkers Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick inspected their spacesuits and found no problems.

Overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning, the crew used a 50-foot-long boom mounted with a special scanner to inspect the ship for signs of damage. During Endeavour’s pre-dawn launch Monday, a camera mounted on the side of the shuttle’s external tank showed a strip of foam insulation falling away from the fuel tank about two minutes after liftoff.
